Its eight, broad, overlapping sepals remain cupped for a long time before the flower finally opens flat. A narrow, deep-red bar is visible in the center of each sepal. The white filaments show off the red anthers of Clematis `Etoile de Malicorne'. Late spring to early summer; early autumn. 8-10 ft. Purple Blue flowers *Sun, Part Shade Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9*
Early flowering in the spring on the previous year's growth. If you hard prune, you eliminate most or all of the early blooms. Instead, groom this after flowering by cutting back the top one-third to one-half of some stems. This encourages new growth for possible summer bloom.
