We feel very fortunate in our friendship with Tomoko and Mikiyoshi Chikuma who own a small clematis nursery in Japan. They have been working for many years on crosses between our North American clematis species. Recently they have developed a line of plants they describe as being "kodachi" indicating that they are herbaceous but upright in habit. Clematis 'Harugasumi' (2011) is one of this new collection. The Japanese name translates to "spring mist" and indeed the creamy green flowers have a fresh spring character. The somewhat nodding flowers are bell-shaped with the tips of the sepals recurving. The Chikumas have taught us to cut the flowers and use them in small arrangements or bud vases. When you do so, the plants send up new growth and bloom again.
Late spring to early summer. Repeat if cut back. 2 ft. x 2 ft.
