Our friends Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne at Northwest Garden Nusery have given us seedlings of the lovely C. viorna that graces their garden. The lustrous urn-shaped flowers have recurved tepals that reveal their whitish interiors. The flowers of these seedlings are slightly variable with a range of color from dark rose to red rose. The compound leaves are composed of 5-to-7 small leaflets. This is an ideal vine to grow in a mid-sized shrub because its foliage is not large and heavy. We have grown it in Osmanthus 'Goshiki' where the gold variegated foliage of the shrub displays the red flowers beautifully. The seed-heads are attractive long after the flowers have finished their bloom.

Mid- to late summer.  6-8 ft.
