This has been in our gardens for 3 years and has remained consistently rosy red in flower - a feat that is unusual in our lightly acid soil. We are aware of the work of the American hybridizer Merrit but can not find any information on a 'Merrit Red' in the literature. Merrit was famous for the development of hydrangeas for the floral trade and is commemorated in such plants as 'Merrit's Supreme' and 'Merrit's Blue', both excellent garden plants. This is proving to be excellent as well. Its foliage has the thick substance and shine that we associate with the other Merrit plants. The mophead flowers are a little smaller than those of the others and the plant has remained compact. We will report back on this as it more fully matures. One feature we do note is the good red fall color on our stock plant which we grow in full sun.
