China. Metasequoia glyptostroboides is an ancient conifer, known only through fossil records until rediscovered after WWII. We used to grow it in a huge tub in our retail area until we grew concerned about its ever increasing height. We moved it to a permanent site. The tree is deciduous turning a golden brown in autumn before dropping its leaves and revealing its well-branched silhouette. In spring the soft green foliage is very appealing. Fast growing, always interesting. A great tree for a large garden. A Great Plant Picks selection.
