We were worried that this evergreen shrub would be harmed after the record cold of December 2009. But it survived unscathed to open its clusters of tiny flowers at each leaf axil. These perfumed the air in December and January. The dark green leaves are noticeably narrow and come to an acute point. They are semi-glossy, while our other forms of Sarcococca have shiny leaves. And yes, the stems of Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna 'Purple Stem' are pronouncedly purple. In habit, the densest growth is at the base of the shrub and it is more open near its top. Our measurements for the plant are based on four years of growth.
