CLAYTONIA (Spring beauty) - Portulacaceae

150-795-1     Clematis aff urophylla
Sun, Part Shade     Zones (7), 8, 9 Creamy White flowers
This evergreen clematis has been difficult to identify. We received it originally from our friends the Sugimotos in Japan. They had gotten it in China where it was listed as Clematis anshuensis. That nomenclature is equivalent to Clematis clarkeana. After many years, we have concluded that this plant is not C. clarkena. It does not match the botanical description. Instead it is much closer to C. urophylla because of several characteristics. One, the flowers are not "glabrous" (smooth) on the outside as those of C. clarkeana are described. Nor are they flushed with purple. Instead they are white to greenish white. In addition, the length of the stamens is one-half the length of the sepals which is characteristic of C. urophylla. Also, this vine blooms from December to early February, much later than C. clarkeana. No matter, what the botanical name, this is a fine plant for a sheltered garden. We grow it in part shade in a rhododendron. Its dark green, deeply veined leaves are three-part: the central leaflet is the largest. All leaflets come to a pointed tip that often twists. The flower buds are pale green and very rounded. In our specimen, the flowers seem to occur in pairs. We've grown this for more than 10 years and have struggled with nomenclature, but have decided it is garden-worthy and needs to be enjoyed by clematis lovers.  December, January, and February. bloom   12 ft.

150-808-1     Clematis 'Akafuji'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Red flowers
We are delighted to have Clematis 'Akafuji' in our collection. It is one of the few "red" double-flowered clematis that we have grown. In the world of clematis, true red (whatever that might be to a particular viewer) is usually rosy red or red madder or petunia red. That is the case with this Clematis patens form as well. Nonetheless, the balance between the rosy red of the sepals and the yellow of the anther tips is very pleasing. In shape, the flowers are rounded, even chubby, as the Japanese describe them. One nice thing about the color is that it is fairly sun- proof and does not fade in the light. The name means "Red Fuji" referring to Mt. Fuji at sunset or dawn, perhaps. There is a tradition in the Japanese pictoral arts of painting Mt. Fuji in various colors. We are told that this was selected or hybridized by nurseryman Oikawa Tatsuyuki. Because of the modest size of the plant, this is suitable for a container or use in a smaller garden.  May to June and Autumn. bloom   6-8 ft.

150-622-1     Clematis 'Akiko'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Light Blue flowers

All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  April to May; August. bloom   6-8 ft.

150-304-1     Clematis 'Albina Plena'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8 White flowers
Climbing through a medley of shrubs in a partly shaded corner of our garden, Clematis 'Albina Plena' always surprises us when her clean white bell-shaped flowers begin to open. The four primary sepals taper in spidery fashion and enfold a cluster of narrower white sepals within. In width flowers measure more than 3 inches, large enough to be clearly seen from a distance. The short filaments are not readily visible, but a charming red blotch at the base of the sepals (at the top of the flower) adds a dash of color. This is one of many lovely clematis hybridized by Magnus Johnson, the Swedish author of an astounding monograph on clematis. This cross between C. fauriei and C. siberica (F2 hybrid) was released in 1982.  April through May. bloom   10 ft.

When Clematis 'Andromeda' first bloomed in our gardens, it drew a crowd of admirers. The tapered white sepals had bright rose pink bars flaring from their bases in a brush-stroke fashion. In the spring the flowers are semi-double and quite dramatic, but in the autumn, the flowers are smaller and have a more delicate charm. 'Andromeda' was raised by Ken Pyne from seed he gathered from C. 'General Sikorski' (formerly 'Jadwiga Teresa'). It was released in 1994.  Late spring to summer; late summer. bloom   8-10 ft.

Sun, Part Shade     Zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Creamy White flowers
We grow this clematis up the stump of a dead tree on nylon netting. What we have come to appreciate about this extra-hardy plant is the fact that it is always in bloom during the growing season. It never covers itself in flowers, but continues to produces a more modest display continuously throughout the summer and into the fall. The small bowl-shaped, creamy white flowers nod in terminal clusters. They have four sepals with a very showy boss of yellow stamens within. Clematis 'Anita' (Zwijnenburg, 1988) is a cross between C. potaninii var. fargesii and C. tangutica. This large vine has somewhat small, gray green, pinnate foliage. 150-546-1     Clematis 'Bambino'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 White flowers
A Joy Creek Nursery Introduction for 2016. Although we do not know the parentage of this seedling, we assume that one of the parents is Clematis patens 'Tenri no Asagasumi'. The amazing size of the spring blooms of Clematis 'Bambino' first impressed us. After ten years of growing it in our garden, we have also come to admire its vigor, its free-flowering nature and its willingness to bloom for an extended time. The big, ornamental seedheads of 'Bambino' are also a sure sign of its Clematis patens heritage. The six-inch flowers have sepals that are ruffled along their edges and come to acute tips. In their interior, the red purple anthers contrast vividly with the white flesh of the sepals. When we first found this seedling, we laughingly called it 'Bambino' and that is the name that has stuck.  Late spring to early summer; late summer. bloom   6-8 ft.

Back in the 1970's, '80's and '90's, Estonian hybridizers Uno and Aili Kvistik were developing numerous clematis cultivars for Soviet bloc countries. Many of their cultivars, like 'Romantika,' 'Viola,' and 'Mikilite' have made their way into gardens in North America, however, Clematis 'Bella' is rarely seen. This is a shame. The rounded white flowers have six sepals which have cream-colored central bars. The filaments and anthers are whitish as well. It is the purple red anther connectives at the tips of the filaments that offer a dash of color to the pristine flowers.  May to June; July to September. bloom   6-9 ft.

The parentage is unclear but we think it is a cross between C. `Jan Lindmark' and C. `Pamela Jackman' which were growing near each other. The four, long, tapering sepals are dark red purple. When we first found the seedling, the flowers were literally dancing in our spring winds. The leaves are 3-ternate with burgundy stems. This is a vigorous vine which needs regular weekly watering during the summer.  Mid- to late spring. bloom   8 ft.

Sun     Zones 7, 8, 9 Creamy White flowers
This is a seedling found by the staff at Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection which they rescued and named Clematis 'Early Times' for its exceptionally early bloom. Because it is a Clematis cirrhosa cross that means the flowers begin to open very early in the fall and continue non-stop until the spring. We grow Clematis cirrhosa and its cultivars in sheltered locations in the garden but insure that they get good sun. We find that if the temperature goes much below freezing, the existent buds will not open but will wait until the temperature returns above freezing to open. In leaf, the foliage appears to be well divided like Clematis cirrhosa var. balearica, however, it is not so finely cut. The flowers are creamy white with maroon stipling in the interior.  Autumn to spring. bloom   8-12 ft.

The name, which literally means "Edo purple" (Edo being the former capital of Japan), suggests a majestic or imperial purple. The dark anthers and green filaments blend into the flower. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Late spring to early summer; late summer. bloom   8-10 ft.

150-828-1     Clematis 'Elegant Rhythm'
Sun     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Purple Blue flowers
Clematis 'Elegant Rhythm' is a Joy Creek Introduction for 2016. We have long been interested in the attributes of Clematis integrifolia - its winter hardiness, free-flowering nature and its non-climbing habit especially make it valuable to gardeners. 'Elegant Rhythm' is the third of five seedlings we selected from a batch of seeds from our finest integrifolia stock plant. Originally, we were looking for self-supporting plants but, because we water from overhead, the stems tended to flatten. We have opted to use a simple stake and one piece of garden twine to keep 'Elegant Rhythm' upright throughout the season. The beak-like buds start out with their tips pointing upward. Then, as the flowers begin to open, they curve downward in a shepherd's crook fashion. The pagoda-roofed flowers are rich purple blue. The undersides of the leaves are coppery bronze as they emerge. Dark stems are yet another element that enhances this introduction. Cut back by half in midsummer after the first flowering to get an autumn bloom or continue to dead-head on a regular basis and get continuous summer bloom. The flowering stems make attractive cut flowers. Easily grown in a container or in a mixed border. Tried and true for Pacific Northwest gardens.  Summer. bloom   20-24 inc. x 8-10 in.

The large leaves are rounded and are attached to the stout stems with very short leaf petioles. They appear to be perfoliate. Their deep veining and leathery surface are handsome. The tubular flowers are solitary, rising slightly above the top pair of leaves. Individual flowers can measure up to 1.5-inches in length. They are thick, ribbed, and slightly nodding. Masako Takeuchi was a gifted hybridizer of clematis. Over the years we have been able to add some of her plants to our collection. The striking star-like flowers of Clematis 'Haru Ichiban' (1992) show some of the characteristics of the plants she selected. It is a cross between C. 'Barbara' Jackman' and C. 'Mrs. N. Thompson' and, although it has the vigor of both of those plants, it does not have the same coloration. The texture of the flowers is somewhat mottled in appearance as if they were made of a more porous fabric. The veining and the paler central bar is accentuated by the downward slope of the sepals making the flowers look as if they were about to take flight. These shrubby clematis are among the easiest to grow. They are content to bloom all summer in the sun with only occasional water and feed. Their dark green, rugged, three-part leaves are large with individual leaflets measuring 6 1/2 inches long. Tall flower stems reach 45 inches in height with flowers borne in clusters at two or three widely separated axils. The whorled clusters are composed of loose stems bearing 3 to 5 buds each. The buds open sequentially extending the bloom season for a very long time. Individual flowers are 1 3/4 inches wide with recurved tips. Rich violet blue on opening, they slowly fade to gentian blue. If this were not enough, the flowers are also fragrant giving off a spicy honey-like scent on warm days.  July to September. bloom   2 ft. x 3 ft.

The large and jagged foliage is attractively rugged. Clematis heracleifolia `China Purple' is best grown in full sun.  Summer. bloom   2 ft. x 2 ft.

Sun     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Rose flowers
Clematis INSPIRATION ('Zoin') (Wim Snoeijer) (2000) is a lovely non-clinging vine that is a cross between C. integrifolia 'Rosea' and Clematis 'Warszawska Nike'. You can see the integrifolia traits in its lax habit and its rich pink coloring. In the wavy margins of the 2-3 inch outward-facing flower, you can see the traits of the large flowered clematis. This is great for containers, draping over a wall or trained into a low shrub. Cut back hard at the end of winter. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  June to September. bloom   5 ft.

150-878-1     Clematis integrifolia 'Blue Ribbons'
Sun     Zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Indigo Blue flowers
Clematis integrifolia and its selections hold an important place in of the world of clematis. They are herbaceous plants often reaching more than 3 feet in height. They are extremely cold hardy and carry their beautiful umbrella-shaped blooms for a very long time. They have one bad habit. Although they are clumping perennials, they often fall open if not staked or tied up. This habit has perhaps kept them from entering the frontline of great plants for North American gardens. Now the German seed company Jelitto has introduced a reliable seed strain which they call Clematis 'Blue Ribbons'. The plants are said to be shorter and more upright. At 16 inches in height they need little staking unless they receive overhead water. The flowers make wonderful additions to cut flower arrangements or can be used individually in bud vases. Perhaps now Clematis intergrifolia will begin to get the attention of the gardening public that it deserves.  May through August. bloom   16 in. x 16 in.

Sun, Part Shade     Zones 6, 7, 8, 9 Purple Red flowers
Thanks to the Rogerson Clematis Collection for giving us our specimen of this hard-to-find climber. Clematis japonica 'Gokanosho' was found in Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu, Japan, by Tetsushi Shiraishi in a district called Goka no sho. It is notable for the modest variegation that it has on its foliage. Our plant has leaves that are splashed or lightly mottled in creamy white, although sometimes leaves are all green. Sometimes there is a blush of pink in the variegation. The variegation is most noticeable when the vine is in bloom. The bell-shaped flowers have four very fleshy sepals that recurve at their tips. The purple red is deepest at the sepal tips and grows gradually paler, almost white, at the top of the inch-long bell. Inside the sepals are pale with greenish white filaments.  May to June. bloom   6-12 ft.

150-333-1     Clematis 'Jenny Keay'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 7, 8, 9 Pale Greenish White flowers
Allister Keay, the wonderful New Zealand clematis grower and breeder, brought a gift plant of Clematis 'Jenny Keay' to us when he visited our nursery back in the 1990's. We have grown it in a container as a treasure for many years. This Clematis montana form (thought to be the result of a cross between C. montana and C. spooneri) has a unique appearance. Its flowers are both double and semi-double. Additionally, it is not as vigorous as many montana forms, is slower growing and has tighter internodes. These are assets that have allowed us to grow it in a series of containers for the last many years. The flowers of 'Jenny Keay' are very lovely. When grown in the sun, they have a pink blush in the outer sepals. In the shade the flowers are more greenish white. The filaments are a complementary pale green with yellowish green anthers. Allister Keay (pronounced like the alphabet letter "k") is one of the most accomplished clematarians we have met. It is a real honor to be able to offer Clematis 'Jenny Keay' for sale.  (May) June. bloom   18 ft.

Clematis 'Kagayaki no Mai' (Kozo Sugimoto, pre-2001) has its heritage in Clematis viticella and reflects that species in its prolific summer bloom and smaller flowers. The red purple blooms have a distinct twist on their sepals that gives them the appearance of dancing on the vine. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Summer. bloom   6-10 ft.

Sun     Zones 6, 7, 8, 9 Violet flowers
Our friends the Chikumas have created many delightful small-flowered clematis hybrids using a variety of our North American species. They develop the majority of their plants to be grown in containers. Clematis 'Little Bell Sumire' (2010) is no exception. Compact in height, with linear foliage and inch-long flowers, it is ideal for containers but has also done well in the open garden. Give it a place where it can be seen up close. The somewhat outward facing tubular flowers are a soft violet on the exterior and are a rich violet inside. Because the tips of the sepals recurve, the dark violet is clearly revealed as the flowers mature. The name 'Little Bell Sumire' is a hybrid as well, using English and Japanese. "Sumire" is the Japanese for violet which describes the color of these small bells.  Early to midsummer. bloom   2.5 ft. x 2.5 ft.

150-021-1     Clematis macropetala
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8 Blue flowers
More than 25 years ago, we received a plant of Clematis macropetala from a local grower. We have grown this plant in different sized containers and in varying settings in the garden throughout the last few decades, but we have never propagated it until now. This selection of Clematis macropetala has such nice-sized flowers of good blue we have decided it deserves to be in the trade. The broader outer sepals of the ballet-skirt flowers are violet blue. They hold a ruff of narrower blue sepals within. Please note that over the years, as our weather has changed, we have noticed that this plant does best in the Pacific Northwest with morning sun and protection from the hottest afternoon sun. It also likes good drainage and regular water.  Spring to early summer. bloom   10-13 ft.

150-339-1     Clematis 'Mrs. Robert Brydon'
Sun     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Pale Blue flowers
The history of Clematis 'Mrs. Robert Brydon' reminds us that many of the plants that we grow in our gardens have been "found" by gardeners. In this case, in 1935, the gardener for Elizabeth Prentiss of Cleveland, Ohio, found this cross between C .heracleifolia var. davidiana, a species from China, and our North American native, C. virginiana. It was named for the gardener's wife. This big herbaceous clematis has managed to remain in the trade ever since. One of the reasons for its popularity is the fact that it blooms for an extended period of time. Individual flowers are small but are borne in great profusion near the terminals of the stem. Each flower has four or five sepals that are curled back to expose prominent stamens. Because it does not climb, we have found it useful in large containers where we let it spill dramatically to the ground. We have also used it to cover gentle inclines and to hide stumps. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Midsummer to mid-autumn. bloom   6-8 ft.

Clematis 'Nagara' is an early selection made by the Japanese hybridizer Kozo Sugimoto in 1990. We have grown this reliable plant for almost 18 years. The lovely large flowers lighten along the central bar of their sepals as they age. The sepals are fairly narrow and arch so that their pointed tips turn downward in a graceful fashion. A sharp contrast is found in the white filaments that turn red where they join the reddish anthers. The flowers are an elegant fusion of shape and color. We are sure that the name refers to the Nagara River which flows not far from the Sugimoto home.  May and June; late summer. bloom   6-8 ft.

150-437-1     Clematis patens ex Nara
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Blue flowers
Clematis patens is the major parent of the large flowered, spring blooming clematis. Over the years we have acquired many forms of this species in our attempt to better understand the history of their development. We raised this form from seed that was collected near Nara, Japan. The mother plant is the only seedling that grew from the few seeds we were given and we labeled it Clematis patens ex Nara. These are cuttings from that plant which we have had in our collection for almost twenty years. There are many reasons to grow this form of the species. It is easy to grow. Its modest growth habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens. And its lavender blue flowers are lovely.  May to June and late summer. bloom   6-8 ft.

150-080-1     Clematis patens 'Komurasaki'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8 Lavender flowers
For more than a decade, we have grown Clematis patens 'Komurasaki', a selection of the species Clematis patens which is found in the wild on the island of Kyushu and named by Minoru Hosino. In spring it attracts many photographers when it covers itself from head to toe with large soft rounded flowers. It has also been generous with a modest repeat bloom throughout the summer. The anthers are a subtle green yellow. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Spring with summer repeat. bloom   8 ft.

150-111-1     Clematis patens 'Yukiokoshi'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 White flowers
This is a double form of the species Clematis patens found in the wild in Japan. The magnificent large blooms of Clematis patens 'Yukiokosi' are quite early to open. Their creamy white sepals are often tinged with green when they open and, at times, they are flushed rose pink. We have grown this now for many years and it always repeats in late summer. Often it has buds throughout the growing season. It is our understanding that the name 'Yukiokoshi' refers to the sound of thunder that precedes snowfall. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Spring, late summer. bloom   6-8 ft.

150-672-1     Clematis 'Pauline'

150-411-1     Clematis PIILU
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Mauve Pink flowers
One of life's pleasures is finding a plant that teaches you something new. Clematis PIILU ('EPPIVCD') (Uno Kvistik) is a compact, early, sometimes double, but mostly single-blooming vine that can easily be made to bloom on a 3-ft. pot-stake. This was one of the first European clematis that was marketed as having that habit and indeed it paved the way for a new line of plants. Ideal for patio containers and small gardens. The mauve pink sepals have dark pink central bars. The filaments are pale with golden anthers. Later blooms are always single. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  May to June; September to October. bloom   4-5 ft.

150-459D4     Clematis 'Pink Pinwheel' (Joy Creek Nursery)
Sun     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Rose Pink flowers
We selected numerous seedlings from a giant form of Clematis integrifolia that we were given by the late Kazushige Ozawa. Among those seedlings was this much shorter, hebaceous beauty with lightly bronzed young foliage and large complementary rose pink bell-flowers whose sepals recurve broadly and twist giving the flower its pinwheel appearance. The sepals are also ruffled along their margins. Tie this up to a single stake and enjoy a long season of bloom. Or allow it to ramble for a wilder effect. The flowers make excellent, long-lasting cuts. If deadheaded, the stems will continue to produce new flowers. The showy, silvery seedheads are a bonus.  Early summer to late summer. bloom   2.5 ft. x 2.5 ft.

150-658-1     Clematis 'Pixie'
Sun     Zones 7, 8, 9 Pale Yellow Green flowers
The late Graham Hutchins, proprietor of County Park Nursery in Essex, England, was a specialist in New Zealand flora. Clematis 'Pixie' is the result of his cross between C. petriei 'Princess' and C. marmoraria, both evergreen New Zealand species. It was released in 1986 and has remained popular because of its profuse early bloom. As the name suggests, the plant forms a compact evergreen trailing shrub that is usually tied up on a stake in the garden. Because it has not been reliably hardy for us without some protection from cold and from our overly wet soils in winter, we grow it near a wall under an eave. Clusters of starry flowers on axilary stems create a delightful display in early spring showing off well against the thick, dark green foliage that reminds us of extra-crisp parsley. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  March to April. bloom   3 ft.

150-866-1     Clematis 'Roguchi No. 2'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8 Dark Purple flowers
Kazushige Ozawa made the cross between C. integrifolia and C. reticulata that resulted in the hybrid 'Roguchi' which is now a world-wide favorite. At the same time, he selected two other seedlings which remained unnamed. Since Mr. Ozawa's death, his nephew Mikiyoshi Chikuma has maintained those two crosses. Recently, Mr. Chikuma released the second cross. Its flowers are almost identical to the original 'Roguchi' - deep plummy bell-flowers of good texture and size that bloom throughout the summer. The foliage, however, is a little different, more like C. intergrifolia and less like C. reticulata. As a result, this plant is more upright, with stiffer stems. Most importantly, it is less susceptible to powdery mildew than the original 'Roguchi'. We have grown 'Roguchi No. 2' for three years and think it is a fine plant. It is not as lush in appearance as the first, but may be an improvement for gardeners in areas of high humidity. Mr. Chikuma has allowed us to use this name to distinguish it from the original.  Summer. bloom   6-8 Ft. x 6-8 ft.

150-455-1     Clematis 'Rubra'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Burgundy Red flowers
It is not known if this is the same as the plant recorded in John Gerrard's "Herball" of 1597 as Clematis viticella rubra. If so, Clematis 'Rubra' would be a very old cultivar, indeed. We do know that it is a viticella and that it has deep red nodding flowers usually with four sepals. The sepals have an almost velvety sheen when the flowers are freshly opened. Individual sepals are blunt-tipped with recurved margins. There is often a small patch of white at the base of the sepals, but that is not always true. The anthers tips are brownish red and the filaments are light green. Although the flowers are not large, 'Rubra' rewards us with reliable bloom over an extended period of time.  July to September. bloom   8-12 ft.

All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Summer. bloom   6 ft.

150-876-1     Clematis SAPHYRA INDIGO
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Indigo flowers
This lovely recent addition to the realm of herbaceous clematis is a cross between Clematis x diversifolia 'Olgae' and C. 'The President' both of which are venerable cultivars. It was hybridized in France by Laurence Arene-Querand. The diversifolia parent gives the plant its general habit, longevity of bloom and flower shape. The mid-sized dark blue flowers consist of 5 or 6 (sometimes 4) sepals that twist slightly and come to a pointed tip. Of particular note are the dark anther tips that are very pronounced in the young flowers. As the flowers age and widen the white filament bases become more visible and become an attractive contrast to the dark sepals. The sepals are well-ribbed on their reverse sides. We grow Clematis SAPHYRA INDIGO in a large pot where it is tied into a low trellis and also allowed to spill freely over the lip of the container.  June, July, August, September. bloom   3-4 ft.

150-879-1     Clematis 'Shikon'
Sun     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Purple flowers
Integrifolia type clematis are among the easiest and most rewarding clematis for the mixed border. They do not climb, but instead are best treated as long-blooming perennials. We have found that they can be easily tied up with a single stake and a bit of twine. This keeps the woody stems upright and the single, nodding flowers visible. Clematis 'Shikon' (2010) was chosen from a group of open-pollinated seedling of Clematis 'Rooguchi' by Mikiyoshi Chikuma. Its flowers have four sepals that are long and narrow, have wavy margins and twist as they mature. 'Shikon' is Japanese for dark purple blue, the color of the flowers.  Summer. bloom   3 ft. x 2 ft.

Sun     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Violet Purple flowers
(C. 'Candida' x C. x durandii) For those who do not mind tying up this non-clinging vine, the rewards of Clematis 'Sizaia Ptitsa' (M.A. Beskaravainaya) are great. This is a very tough, hardy, long-blooming plant. The 5-inch flowers are somewhat cupped and their sepals recurve and twist slightly giving them a pinwheel appearance. 150-467-1     Clematis socialis     ( Alabama leather flower )
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 6, 7, 8, 9 Violet Blue flowers
We received our specimen of Clematis socialis from a clematis researcher many years ago and have had it growing in our garden ever since. This is a rare and endangered plant in its type sites in Alabama and Georgia. Unlike most woody clematis, however, this is rhizomatous in nature, soon establishing a densely rooted colony with numerous stems each bearing a solitary urn-shaped flower. The four fleshy sepals of the flowers are prominently ribbed and have lightly colored margins. The sepals recurve at their tips. The foliage also is not characteristic of most clematis. It is linear and narrow, longer toward the base of the plant and shorter near the top of the stem. Not many clematis are fragrant, but here again Clematis socialis is unusual. The flowers have a delicious honey-like scent. We have allowed this to naturalize in a mixed border where we often find the flowers in unusual combinations with neighboring plants. The flowering stems can also be cut and used in a bud vase.  Late spring to early summer. bloom   12-15 in.

We were privileged to be able to gather seeds and seedlings of Clematis texensis (Tarpley River Form) at a private ranch outside of San Antonio, Texas. We have seedlings from our original collection, all bearing the characteristic long scarlet tube with scarlet interior. In the wild we saw this growing through dense shrubbery on the side of the road. We treat it in a similar way, allowing it to ramble over shrub roses. Once established, the flowers continue to open all summer and well into the autumn. The seedheads are also dramatic and persist through the autumn. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Summer to autumn. bloom   10-12 ft.

In the 1980's Sakata Seed Company of Japan produced a series of clematis that were named for Japanese mountains. Mt.Tsubakuro in Nagano Prefecture is celebrated in this particular clematis. As the flowers open its sepals reveal a distinct red central bar which fades with time to match the lustrous red purple of the flower. We are happy to have it back in production. Clematis 'Tsuzuki' bears beautiful mid-sized, rounded, white flowers with light yellow anthers that really complement the overall effect. Mr. Ozawa was excited about using 'Tsuzuki' in the cut flower trade but soon changed his focus to bell shaped clematis. This can be grown in containers or in the garden. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  May and June; August and September. bloom   6-8 ft.

Clematis 'Vancouver Morning Mist' (Clearview Nursery) is a cross between C. 'Souvenir du Capitaine Thuilleaux' and C. 'Kathleen Wheeler', both excellent plants. The impressive flowers are seven to nine inches in width. Their frilled margins reveal hints of bright pink from the reverse of the sepals. A central boss of white filaments with yellow anthers subtly complements the flower color. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.  Spring to autumn. bloom   6-8 ft.

150-880-1     Clematis 'VancouverTM Mystic Gem'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 White/Blush Pink flowers

150-720-1     Clematis 'Vilhelmine'
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8 White flowers
Clematis 'Vilhelmine' is rarely available in the nursery trade. This is a shame, because it is an exceptionally good climber. It was raised in Latvia by L. Bakevicius and named for the Clematis breeder Vilhelmine Riekstina. The star-shaped flowers are large, but not overly so. The six sepals are lightly wavy along their magins and come to a decidely pointed tip. There is a hint of color in the ribbed central bar of the sepals that is reflected in the contrasting brown-red anthers. This is a lovely but subtle detail. Rumor has it that this is fragrant, but we have not detected much sweetness. We don't mind because the flowers are produced in such profusion it would be greedy to ask for more.  May to July and September. bloom   6-8 ft.

150-156-1     Clematis 'Ville de Lyon'

Sun, Part Shade     Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Red Rose flowers
Our friends Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne at Northwest Garden Nusery have given us seedlings of the lovely C. viorna that graces their garden. The lustrous urn-shaped flowers have recurved tepals that reveal their whitish interiors. The flowers of these seedlings are slightly variable with a range of color from dark rose to red rose. The compound leaves are composed of 5-to-7 small leaflets. This is an ideal vine to grow in a mid-sized shrub because its foliage is not large and heavy. We have grown it in Osmanthus 'Goshiki' where the gold variegated foliage of the shrub displays the red flowers beautifully. The seed-heads are attractive long after the flowers have finished their bloom.  Mid- to late summer. bloom   6-8 ft.
