Abeliophyllum distichum is one of Nadine's picks for underused early spring bloomers. This mid-sized arching shrub, sometimes called White Forsythia, is in bloom well before the true Forsythias show their gold. Pair it with other early bloomers like Hellebores. If the day is warm and sunny, you can get a whiff of the elusive perfume of the flowers. In autumn the foliage takes on purple tones.
