Manzanitas are quickly becoming choice shrubs for Pacific Northwest gardens. Arctostaphylos 'Austin Griffiths', a cross between A. densiflora 'Sentinel' and A. manzanita 'Dr. Hurd', was released by Native Sons Nursery, Arroyo Grande, CA in the 1980's. With more than a 30-year history in gardens up and down the West Coast, it has certainly proved itself. Plant this as a specimen in well-drained soil and you will quickly come to enjoy its beautiful reddish bark and upright habit. Because it is drought-tolerant it needs very little additional water. The rounded evergreen foliage is sage-green and shows off the clusters of pink urn-shaped flowers attractively.
