This mostly evergreen shrub is a selection from a cross between two Chinese species of barberry, B. aggregata and B. wilsonii. Mounding in habit with densely arching branches, Berberis x carminea 'Pirate King' makes an attractive specimen with its generous display of down-facing, cup-shaped flowers beginning in late spring followed later by a brilliant show of orange red fruits. Because it has thorns which are often concealed beneath its rounded leaves, 'Pirate King' is also useful for creating deer-proof hedging.
Late spring, early summer. 5 ft. x 8 ft.
