Japan, China. The lance-shaped foliage of Bletilla striata seems more bamboo-like than orchid-like, but once the bell-shaped flowers begin to open, it becomes apparent that this is a terrestrial orchid. Grow this in a sheltered woodland setting. Gardeners at the colder end of its hardiness should mulch deeply before the winter.
Spring to early summer. 12 in. x 12 in.
