There is something elegant and even a little exotic about this deciduous shrub. Its slender green leaves have visibly gray green undersides. The central branches are upright while the outer ones lean outward giving the shrub a large top and a narrower base. The panicles of Buddleia japonica taper and drape, tress-like, reaching up to 20 inches long. Examined closely, the panicles are composed of numerous shapely tubular flowers in sets of up to five individuals. The flowers are four-lobed.
