Callicarpa dichotoma 'Early Amethyst' is a graceful, arching shrub. The tapering leaves are arranged opposite each other and point both out and downward from the long stems creating a somewhat cascading effect. In October, axillary clusters of small green berries (numbering 20 plus per cluster) appear. As they ripen, they darken to bright shocking violet, a color unexpected at this time of year. Even when it was young, 'Early Amethyst' provided modest winter color. However, because the berries are rather tiny, it was not until the shrub reached its mature size and produced vast quantities of berries that we really enjoyed a dazzling display.
