It is interesting to trace the history of this selection of California lilac. In 1976, M. Nevin Smith found it on a neighbor's ranch on Hood Mountain in Sonoma County and selected it because of its compact size, the bright blue of the small clusters of flowers and the lacquered surface of the pebbled leaves. Ceanothus foliosus 'Berryhill' is named for that ranch. The small size of this evergreen shrub has made it useful in the garden and in rockeries, especially on dry sites.
