Although Ceanothus gloriosus 'Heart's Desire' is not reliably hardy in our area, it is such a lovely, evergreen, ground-covering shrub that we take a chance with it surviving our winters. Many years we are lucky. This is a gold variegated selection of the species found by Phil van Soelen near Heart's Desire Beach at Point Reyes National Seashore. Ceanothus gloriosus is endemic to the coastal areas of Marin, Sonoma and Mendicino Counties in California. Because the shrub roots along its stems, it is excellent at holding banks and for use on slopes. The soft blue flowers are a bonus.
