The first flowering quince that we grew in our garden was a large, densely branched shrub that had unpleasant thorns. It was beautiful in flower and fruit but not easy to manage. It was definitely not suited to a small garden. Chaenomeles 'Dragon's Blood', in contrast, is a dwarf shrub that makes itself at home in a small garden or even in a container. Although it is densely branched, it does not have any thorns. More than anything, though, it is the eye-catching, double, dark red flowers that make you want to grow this plant.
