    This unusual fully double red clematis is the work of Japanese hybridizer Takashi Watanabe (1995).  Clematis 'Red Star' blooms on old wood in late spring and early summer.  The 4-to-6-inch blooms are dense with raspberry red sepals.  We have found that sometimes the large lower sepals can appear almost leaf-like with patches of red and green.  This is a trait it shares with many of the double patens-type clematis.  If you deadhead and fertilize after the first bloom, you can encourage a second flush of flowers in the early fall.
