This lovely recent addition to the realm of herbaceous clematis is a cross between Clematis x diversifolia 'Olgae' and C. 'The President' both of which are venerable cultivars. It was hybridized in France by Laurence Arene-Querand. The diversifolia parent gives the plant its general habit, longevity of bloom and flower shape. The mid-sized dark blue flowers consist of 5 or 6 (sometimes 4) sepals that twist slightly and come to a pointed tip. Of particular note are the dark anther tips that are very pronounced in the young flowers. As the flowers age and widen the white filament bases become more visible and become an attractive contrast to the dark sepals. The sepals are well-ribbed on their reverse sides. We grow Clematis SAPHYRA INDIGO in a large pot where it is tied into a low trellis and also allowed to spill freely over the lip of the container.
