We have grown Clematis 'Sophie' (M. Chikuma, 2004) for more than 10 years in the garden. During that time period, we have repeatedly been asked for it by customers who see it in our stock field. It was originally named 'Sophie Belle' to celebrate its bell-shaped flowers and also Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, where the wife of the breeder attended university. Because of a conflict with a previous name, that first name was disallowed. Standing no more than 2.5 ft. with purple flowers nodding from upright burgundy flower stems, this is an ideal herbaceous clematis for a container or for the front of the border. The narrow, 2-inch leaves are occasionally stained burgundy as well. All of our Clematis are two year old plants that are suitable for immediate planting in your garden.
