Coryopsis sinensis var. calvescens f. veitchiana plays an important role in our early spring garden when its 3-inch racemes dangle fragrant flowers from its leafless branches. For sheer flower-power, there are few spring-blooming shrubs that can compare. When the rounded and ribbed leaves do appear they are often tinged with bronze. As they mature they turn dark green above and have a blue-green cast underneath. This is a large shrub with sinuous spreading branches. The bark is cinnamon in color with occasional mottling. As the botanical name indicates, the shrub is from China.
