We have come to rely on this small tree to create drama in our lower garden. We keep it stooled so that the majority of its dark foliage is low enough to contrast nicely with the golden leaved plants that we have introduced there. Cotinus coggyrgia 'Velvet Cloak' has plume-like, terminal panicles in the summer that give the plant its "smoke-like" halo that is referred to in its common name. Its rounded, 3-inch leaves are a rich purple with red highlights during the summer. As the temperatures begin to cool in the autumn, the leaves take on smouldering red tones.
