Cynara cardunculus is a relative of the artichoke (Cynara scolymus). The cardoons are massive clumping perennials with arching, gray, deeply cut basal foliage and towering bloom spikes. The flower heads resemble prickly artichokes with intense purple flowers that draw bees & hummingbirds alike. The plants may go into a short period of dormancy after blooming. Cut back the spent bloom spike and they will grow new leaves which they will carry through the winter. A Great Plant Picks selection.
