Grevillea lanigera 'Coastal Gem' was a University of Santa Cruz plant introduction in 2001 as part of their series of low-water plants for California gardens. This selection has proven surprisingly drought tolerant and cold hardy for gardeners in western Oregon. The species originates in the Victoria/New South Wales area of Austrailia. The specific name refers to the wooliness of the narrow leaves of this evergreen groundcover. Flowers are spider-like in appearance. Because they bloom at a difficult time of year, they are a welcome treat for year-round resident hummingbirds
