According to Lawrie Metcalf in his book, Hebes, the name for Hebe 'Jasper' is derived from the color of the winter foliage which is reminiscent of the color of the local stone near where this seedling was found at the Forest Research Station, Rangiora, Canterbury, NZ. This is a low mounding evergreen shrub with spikes appearing on both terminal and axillary stems.
