As the name 'Tardiva' suggests, this is one of the latest of the Hydrangea paniculata forms to bloom, usually beginning late in the summer and flowering well into the end of September here. The large floral heads appear to be composed mostly of large sterile flowers which conceal the fertile flowers inside the panicle. The eight-inch floral heads are great additions to late flower arrangements. As the flowers age, they turn pink to purple pink. We have found that Hydrangea paniculata selections are easily pruned and shaped in the spring for those that want a more shrub-like appearance. It is also easy to let this grow to full height and enjoy it as a small tree.
