Hydrangea serrata 'Blue Bird' is considered a classic Japanese mountain hydrangea. Its history and introduction to the West are somewhat unclear but there are records of this small shrub from pre-WWII days. It may be an old Japanese selection called 'Aigaku'. Like the majority of the mountain hydrangeas, the lace-cap flowers are small and can vary in color depending on the acidity of the soil. The leaves are well-rounded and end in graceful, acute tips. In the late summer, the foliage begins to take on red tones and the lace-cap flowers face down revealing their lime green undersides which will gradually become pink with age. This is a wonderful addition to a woodland garden.
