Mountains of Hebei, China. There are few shrubs that can compete with Kolkwitzia amabilis when it is in bloom. In the winter, its deciduous form is densely twiggy. Then with the advent of spring, it becomes covered with three-inch, dark green, tapered leaves and serves as an excellent backdrop to the early flower show around it. By late spring, when it reaches its height of bloom, all eyes are on it. Corymbs of half-inch, pink bells cover the shrub from head to toe. This is a large, lightly suckering shrub that is ideal for large borders.
