Of all the showstoppers in the garden in September and early October, Lespedeza thunbergii must surely take the cake. In full bloom it forms an immense cascading shrub with long branches arching over with their bounty of flowers until their tips almost touch the ground. The two-toned pea flowers are bright rose above and violet below. Each flower may only be 1/2-inch long but there are thousands of them. In our setting the arching stems dangle over a patch of pristine white Anemone japonica and is backed by a stately Cornus 'Hedgerow's Gold'.
