We are indebted to Jerry Flintoff, a Seattle area plantsman, for several plants that he has shared with us. Once this came into bloom in the garden, we understood why he wanted us to grow this bulb. The stately bloom spike was filled with dark, glossy, turkscap flowers. We have read that each stem can bear as many as 50 flowers and we can easily believe it. Lilium martagon 'Claude Shride' was bred in the 1970's by avid hybridizers Hugh and Ruth Cocker from Rochester, MN. The two-inch flowers are like polished mahogany. Their strongly recurved petals have delicate orange spots toward their bases.
Early summer, mid-summer. 5-6 ft.
