Although it hales from North Florida, this deciduous species is surprisingly hardy. What is most surprising about the tree, is the size of its giant leaves which can measure up to 2 feet in length. These dark green, glossy leaves have distinctly glaucous undersides. Magnolia ashei is particularly rewarding because, unlike many magnolias, it will come to bloom three or four years after you plant it. The blooms are magnificent, ten-inch wide, saucer-like flowers that are well worth the brief wait. Looking inside one you will see a red stain at the base of each petal.
Early summer. 30-70 ft. x 25 ft.
