The tough, narrow, holly-like leaves with glaucous blue green surfaces and powdery blue undersides of Mahonia nevinii indicate clearly that this is a plant from a dry region, in this case Southern California. It has proven to be a reliable shrub here in the Pacific Northwest reaching 7 to 8 feet in height on gnarled, very textural branches. The evergreen leaves are copper-red when young, complementing the dense racemes of yellow flowers. In midsummer, it bears slightly orange red berries.
Early to mid-spring. 7-8 ft. x 6-8 ft.
