We have been growing Mukdenia (formerly Acerphyllum) rossii for nearly two decades and have been delighted to find new forms. The Japanese name of this selection can be translated as 'Raven's Wing' which perhaps describes the shape of the leaves which are cupped and raggedly lobed. Perhaps the burgundy color of the autumn foliage contributes to the name. In our mediterranean climate, we grow Mukdenia `Karasuba' in part shade. Early white flowers turn lightly pink as they age and look especially lovely agains the bronze in the young leaves. This herbaceous perennial can look attractive until the very hottest weather if it receives regular water.
