We have found Myrtus communis to be moderate in growth but well worth the wait. The shiny, small evergreen leaves make this a useful structural plant. It is also highly aromatic. The leaves are fragrant when crushed and the flowers have a unique scent that is not sweet but peppery. The white flowers have so many long stamens that they appear to be fuzzy. This versatile shrub can be grown successfully in coastal areas and can also be pruned to form a hedge.
