We have seen this low perennial used effectively to create a lush carpet of green under evergreen shrubs in commercial plantings. Because Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nanus' is not a fast spreader, we know this is an effect that has been created over time or by using a large number of plants. We ourselves use it to demarcate an awkward shady turn in a path. The tufts of leathery, dark green leaves form a thick glossy barrier. Occasionally this will send up bloom spikes with tiny orchid-like flowers. Dark fruits develop in the fall.
