Joy Creek Photo Archive (c) all rights reserved	With Penstemon 'Red Rocks', we cut back the spent bloom spikes after the first incredible flush of flowers in order to promote growth and more bloom late in the season. The tubular flowers are somewhat small - one-inch long and one-inch wide - but they are richly colored with vibrant magenta guidelines in their clean white throats. The narrow lance shaped leaves are evergreen. Summer to first frost. 2.5 ft. x 2.5 ft. Bright Rich Magenta flowers *Sun Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9*
All of the garden hybrid Penstemons need full sun and well-drained soil. We mulch the crowns with 1/4-10 crushed gravel which discourages crown rot by letting water drain off the crown quickly. When planting Penstemons we fertilize them only lightly and then never again. Over fertilizing Penstemons promotes the development of lush soft growth which leads to excessive die back in the winter.
