East and Southeast US. This was one of the first penstemons we planted in our garden. More than 25 years later, the original plant continues to offer its treasure to bumblebees, hummingbirds and many other pollinators. Because it is essentially a prairie plant, we grow it in our mixed borders where its tall bloom spikes can complement grasses, roses and early flowering shrubs. The broad basal foliage is strap-like while the foliage on the stems is lance-shaped in appearance. Panicles of fairly large two-lipped tubular flowers bloom atop the flowering stems.
