After three years in our garden, this slow-growing shrublet stands no more than a foot tall and 15 inches wide. The evergreen, needle-like foliage of Pieris japonica 'Pygmaea' is so different from the better known forms of Pieris that it is not immediately recognizable. Only the leaves at the very tip of the stems, which are the widest, give away the identity of the shrub. Because of its very textural appearance, we use it like we use small mounding Hebes. Try it in a woodland setting or grow it in a container in part shade.
