The green spring foliage of Sambucus nigra 'Purpurea' turns purple-black as it matures. The flowers are pink in bud, opening to cream-pink. Like many sambucus, this can be cut back regularly to keep it shrubby, or trimmed to form a more small tree-like form. Either way, the birds will enjoy the fruit as soon as it is ripe.
