The Japanese name for this twining vine translates to "gold brocade" which only describes one aspect of this very visually complex plant. Young leaves are decidedly a rich amber in color with dark green streaks. As the leaves age their amber turns lemon yellow ("gold") and then eventually becomes ivory. All of these colors are present on the plant at the same time giving it a brocade appearance. Star jasmine leaves are thick and glossy and somewhat rounded in shape. The intensely fragrant flowers are arranged in terminal cymes on lateral stems that are produced on older wood. Individual flowers are 5-petaled in a whirligig fashion.
