Local gardeners often complain that they buy all their plants in the spring and lack for color interest in the summer. With so many summer blooming perennials available, it is hard to be sympathetic with their complaints (although we do try). This is one plant that is easy to recommend to them because it is so tried and true. Veronica austriaca ssp. teucrium is frequently offered with the cultivar name 'Crater Lake Blue', a very nice seed selection. It is ironic that a plant originating in Northern Europe was given an Oregon place name. The species itself is wonderful without any fancy names. Dense mats of gray green, scalloped foliage produce tall stems with 4-to-6-inch flower spikes throughout the summer. Individual flowers are small and saucer shaped, however, gathered together in a bloom spike, they make a gorgeous sight.
