We were given our specimen of Viburnum farreri nanum many years ago by Fred Nilsen who was head arborist at the Hoyt Arboretum in Portland, Oregon. Over the years we have looked forward to the early season bloom of this dense upright shrub. Of particular beauty are the red petioles and veins of the deeply pleated leaves. This bright color makes a powerful impact during our gloomy winter days. The flowers are white with a pink influence. Fred assured us that it did not bloom profusely but we have been pleased with the modest display. In any case, this is an attractive, compact and colorful shrub that is suitable for both smaller and larger gardens.
