Zauschneria californica 'Cloverdale' was collected along the Russian River in 1982 near the California town that gave it its name. We first saw this at Rancho Santa Ana in Claremont, CA and were impressed with its vigor and overall habit. Bart O'Brien who wrote an article for Pacific Horticulture reviewing the Zauschneria trials conducted at Rancho Santa Ana, mentions that this is one of the best of the plants in the trial. The broad foliage is covered with tiny silvery hairs that make it feel soft and almost moist to the touch. The brilliant flowers are wide-mouthed, very showy and attractive to hummingbirds. This is an excellent addition for use in the dry border for late season interest.
